Bonus Days
In July 2019, my partner Shelly was giving our dog Khyber his routine bedtime belly rub and felt a lump in his abdomen. The next day we visited our local vet to have it checked out. They x-rayed Khyber's abdomen and identified a mass on his spleen. A few days later, we saw a specialist for an ultrasound and discovered that Khyber had hemangiosarcoma. This aggressive cancer would take his life in just days to weeks. While we had caught it early, it had already spread throughout his internal organs, making it impossible to operate.
Khyber was more than a dog; he was my best friend. I rescued him from a drug house while I was in graduate school. I couldn't afford a dog, but I didn't want him to stay in his situation. We trained together for several hours every day, he came to the lab I worked in at Queen's University, went on field expeditions to northwest Ontario as an official member of our lab team, adventured with me throughout the Adirondacks, and came to work with me every day of my professional career. For most of his life, he was always within a few feet of me.
The day after we got the diagnosis, I took a picture of Khyber in our yard and titled it "Bonus Day 1." As a professional photographer, I had never trained my lens on Khyber, always on wilderness landscapes. Knowing that he would soon be gone, I only wanted to celebrate and remember the days we had left. I decided to post these photos online, expecting my social media following would plummet because who would care about my dying dog? I didn't know how much the story and sentiment would resonate with so many people. It helped people deal with their own loss and appreciate every day with their loved ones.
John Gray, a famous news anchor for ABC News 10 in Albany, NY, picked up Khyber's story. John's story went on to win an Emmy and brought thousands of people along for our journey of celebrating Khyber's remaining days. You'll find the video and photos below. You may find yourself teary-eyed from watching the video and looking through the photos, I still do. But this story will remind you to treat every day like a Bonus Day when it comes to the ones you love.
