What is Patreon?
The overarching goal of my work as a photographer is to connect people to the natural world and engage them with issues related to its conservation. Those connections are fundamental to people caring about nature, and their willingness to take action to conserve it. In an ever-increasing digital and urban world, full of stress and distractions, it can be challenging for people to maintain connections with the wild places they love.
Paddling the Boreas Ponds
On April 15th New York State announced that they had purchased the Boreas Ponds Tract from The Nature Conservancy. This land acquisition opens up the ponds and surrounding lands to the public for the first time in more than a century. The ponds offer the unique juxtaposition of views of the High Peaks set against a picturesque waterbody.
Five Wildflower Photography Tips
My top five tips for better wildflower photos: use a tripod, shoot at a fast shutter speed, shoot on the same plane as the flower, shoot on cloudy days, and use a telephoto or macro lens.
Marcy Dam Removal
This year the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) stared the process of removing Marcy Dam. The dam suffered significant damage to the bridge and splashboards during Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011. DEC decided that the cost of repair was too great and that the dam itself did not conform with the wilderness land classification applied to the land upon which it sits. The gut reaction by many is disgust and anger. People feel that the DEC is needlessly removing and altering an iconic location within the High Peaks Wilderness.

Gorgeous Metal Prints
I am now offering metal float mounted prints in my online store. These modern pieces will really bring the image into your home, office, or business. The prints are infused into the surface of the metal, rather than printed on it. Then a high gloss coating is applied over top. This process retains an amazing amount of detail and luminance.

Sony RX100 III: A Great Everyday Camera
I recently purchased a Sony RX100 III as an "everyday" camera. My Nikon DSLR is still my go-to camera for most shooting situations, but it's too heavy to lug around all the time. The RX100 III is a great little camera. The first generation RX100 made waves when it first came out. It packs a 20MP 1'' CMOS sensor, which is small compared to DSLR sensors but fairly large for a point-and-shoot.
Seven Awesome Adirondack Stats
2,000 Miles of Hiking Trails. The Adirondack Park is peppered with hiking trails. One of the most crowded hiking areas is the High Peaks Region, and for good reason, this area contains all of the mountains over 4,000 feet in elevation.
Are Snowshoes, Microspikes Damaging Alpine Zones?
After a recent trip up Algonquin, I began wondering what impact this new line of traction devices is having on our mountains. On the one hand, they have lowered the cost and skill thresholds needed to ascending many peaks. On the other, they don’t provide the level of traction necessary for the harshest conditions and more difficult ascents.
