Day 1,345

It was a chilly day here in Saranac Lake, so Nico didn’t get much activity. It was 7°F at our house when we normally go for our morning walk. My cutoff for walking Nico is 10°F; even with a jacket, he gets too cold below that temperature because his fur is thin. It’s not worth the risk of freezing any doggy parts. I spent a portion of the afternoon flying a thermal drone over an area where my dog went missing a little over two weeks ago. The owners have been trying everything to find this dog. Shelly alerted me to the fact they were looking for a drone operator, ideally with an infrared sensor. As soon as I heard that my drone skills could possibly help a dog, I was all in. We just happen to have a drone with an infrared camera at work. Unfortunately, my flights from today didn’t turn up anything, but I’m standing by in case the dog is spotted again. I’ve never tried searching for a dog in the forest with the infrared camera, so as soon as it warms up, I will do some testing with Nico. It may not help this particular lost dog, but at least I’ll have a better idea of the technology could be used in the future.

Many thanks to my Patreon supporters for making this series possible.
