This weekend would have been ideal for Nico to swim, but there was a harmful algal bloom at our normal swimming spot on Lower Saranac Lake on Saturday. If you aren’t familiar with it, harmful algal blooms occur when there are dense cyanobacteria blooms that can produce toxins that can affect people, pets, and wildlife. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to exposure to the toxins because the cyanobacteria get caught up in their fur, and when they lick themselves dry they ingest the toxins. If you see a suspicious algal bloom avoid direct contact and don’t let your dog swim in it.
