Day 1,362

We’ve been on quite the journey with Nico. I try to reflect our ups and downs in these posts, but all of it doesn’t make it through. Nico has simultaneously been the most challenging and most loving dog I’ve ever had. At times he has been a crazy nutcase that we can barely control. We’ve had friends and professionals tell us he’s lucky he ended up with us because others might have surrendered him to a shelter. But here’s how I look at it: dogs are family, and you never give up on family. When we realized we didn’t have the knowledge and skill to help overcome some of his challenges, we sought professional help. Since then, we’ve worked with him daily to build up his training and obedience. We didn’t realize it until after he went to Upstate Canine Academy, but Nico lacked confidence, and some of his outbursts were likely fear-based. I’ve been extra focused on his training for the past nine months, and we’ve noticed his confidence and trust skyrocket. I truly believe that dogs can teach us a lot about ourselves and life if we take the time to reflect. Nico has shown me the value of being a supportive yet firm leader, being more patient, and leaning into challenges rather than getting frustrated or angry.
