Every year, Shelly, Nico, and I visit Don Hamm Tree Farm to cut down our Christmas tree. It’s a local family-owned tree farm just outside Saranac Lake in Vermontville. We drive around their fields in my truck, Nico gets to run like a madman, Shelly looks at every single tree, and I get to use my chainsaw. Inevitably, we find a tree we like, try to remember its location, and then can’t find it again. Nico could careless about the tree selection. Christmas tree farms must have a unique array of scents. I’m sure plenty of wildlife use them, but then there are the hundreds of people that walk around looking for a tree. For Nico, it’s sniff, sniff, sniff, zoom, sniff, sniff, sniff, zoom. It doesn’t get much better for a dog than running and sniffing.
